1. Optimize Site Speed

You will want to make sure you optimize your site speed for SEO and user experience and keep it optimized.

Use a good hosting service. This is key to your basic site speed.

Use a good theme that is lightweight and SEO optimized. We use Generate Press.

Use good plugins that are coded correctly and are SEO optimized.

You will want to use a tool like PageSpeed Insights, to gauge the current speed of your website.

2. Always check your permalink!

You want to make sure that the intended URL for your page or post is the most relevant keyword for your topic for good SEO.

For example, this site’s URL is internettoolsandprograms.com

This specific post’s URL is .

Note: There is a setting in word press where you can choose to have the complete title automatically appear in the permalink bar. I believe this is the default setting but you can check to make sure.

Go to your back office

Click on settings. At the bottom of the menu.

Then Click Permalinks.

3. Use Header Tags

Using header tags is important not only for SEO but for user experience. It is paramount that you only have 1 (one) H1 tag. Use H2 for sections. Use H3 for sub titles.

Using the correct header tags has the added benefit of helping the user follow along the article easier.

In WordPress the title of the blog is an automatic H1 tag therefore you do not need to use the H1 tag for anything else.

Header tags are also made for the search engines to read to help rank your posts so make sure to use your keywords in the headings.

4. Use an SEO plugin.

These plugins will help you manage your keywords, word count, meta description, external and internal linking.

All In One SEO (AIOSEO), Rank Math, Yoast

I currently use Rank Math on one site and AIOSEO on this site but I have used Yoast in the past.

Once the plugin is installed you will see a form appear at the bottom of every post and page.

5. Make sure to submit your XML sitemap to search engines like Google and Bing.

This is an important step for indexing your articles.

If you fail to do this then it could take forever to get your site noticed much less indexed if at all.

A site map helps the spiders crawl your website with ease which is why the next two steps will help with this task.

If you have an SEO plugin all you need to do is type

For example, this site’s xml sitemap address is

It is generated by the All In One SEO plugin on this site.

6. Make Internal Links

Linking pages and posts to each other makes it easier to read for the search engine and your users. It can also help keep users on your site.

Example of Internal Linking

7.  Make External Links

Linking out to other sites shows credibility especially if they are sources you used to write the article.

8. Optimize All Images.

First make sure you compress your image before you place it on your site. Then use a plugin to help compress it further.

Make sure you fill out the alt tag for all your photos. As mentioned repeatedly before, this helps the when crawling your website.

It also helps with the blind because the description can be read out loud by the technology they use to help them navigate the web.

9. Meta Description

Fill out your meta description. This task is made easier by using an SEO plugin (as mentioned above # 4). The meta description is very important as it tells the search engines what your post/page is about and it is a summary for the reader. This is also the place to plug in your keyword.

10.Optimize for Mobile Viewing

11.Do not use Duplicate content. Google hates duplicate content. The first article with the info will show up in the search results. Anything that follows will be totally disregarded. Make sure to only use your own words and make totally unique content.

12.Make sure to post regularly.

It is recommended that you post 2 to 3 times a week.

13.Update old content.

Google loves fresh content so blow the dust off your old posts by updating them regularly.

14.Check for broken links.

This is important for user experience. How would you like to keep clicking on links that go nowhere? You wouldn’t. You might not come back to a site that had broken links. You might even think that the website is no longer working.

So make sure to check for broken links. There are plugins available that can help with this task especially if you have hundreds of links on your site.

Do not EVER buy backlinks. Granted building backlinks is a long and painstaking process, but it is better than the alternative. You can lose everything if google catches on to bad backlinks.

16.No-Index unimportant pages.

There are some pages that just don’t need to be indexed like your privacy policy.

17.Backup your site.

This one is not an SEO mistake but could be fatal mistake if something happens to your site. Will save you the headache of going through this list again.

18.No Keyword Stuffing

This is an old school SEO tactic that no longer works. You want to make sure you have a keyword or keywords for your post but you want it to make sense.

Placing in random keywords will not help you achieve a better rank. Google penalizes sites for this practice.

Remember Google has gotten smarter over the years and knows what you are doing. User intent is an important factor here because Google wants to answer the user query as best as it can.

All of these tips will help you Avoid Common WordPress SEO mistakes and boost your SERP rankings as well.

Write unique and natural, engaging, content and google will rank you for keywords naturally.
